Community Christmas Celebrations in Gorgie Dalry

Sadly due to the current restrictions, Gorgie Dalry Community Council are unable to host our traditional community Christmas party at White Park with Gorgie Dalry Stenhouse Church, Tynecastle High School, Dalry Primary School, and the Edinburgh Lions Club. However, here is a list of several virtual and community-based activities planned to spread some festive cheer during the advent season, and to mark the year that has passed.

Best Dressed Window Competition 2020
Once again we are inviting local businesses across Gorgie and Dalry to dress their window in a festive fashion, to compete for our coveted Best Dressed Window shield and a bottle of bubbly or a box of chocs! Full entry details are available here: Best Dressed Window Competition

Local Schools Christmas Poster Competition
Usually the invitations to the GDCC Christmas party are designed by students from Dalry Primary School and Tynecastle High School, and although we cannot gather together this year, we saw no reason to decline their artistic services! Instead, this year we will be sharing the winning designs on our website, and as posters displayed in local businesses to showcase young artists in our community.

White Park Christmas Lights
Although we cannot gather for the Christmas Light switch on, last year our very own community Christmas tree was planted in White Park. This tree will be decorated by the City of Edinburgh Council again this year, and residents can enjoy it with their individual households. If you take a selfie with it, make sure to tag us! @GDCC_ on Twitter or @GorgieDalryCC on Facebook!

LOVE Gorgie Farm Santa’s Grotto
From December 1st – 22nd, LOVE Gorgie Farm are open until 6.30pm for the community to enjoy their Christmas lights and visit the animals in the evening. They are also hosting a Santa’s Grotto, but places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment! For full details see their Facebook page: LOVE Gorgie Farm

Gorgie Collective Christmas Wreath Workshop
If you’ve always wanted to make your own Christmas wreath but didn’t know where to start, this free workshop with Gorgie Collective is for you! Keep your decorations festive, free and all natural this year by joining their Foraged Wreath-Making workshop on Saturday 12th December at 11am. Booking is essential by sending your name and address to gorgiearts@gmail.com

Big Hearts Delivers Christmas
As a pillar of support in our community, this festive season the Big Hearts Community Trust is going on the road to deliver Christmas essentials and tailored support directly to vulnerable people’s homes! Find out more about how you can support this fantastic effort: Big Hearts Christmas 2020

BMC Social Club Memorial Christmas Tree
This year has been a difficult year for the BMC Social Club, who have said goodbye to several of their treasured members. In tribute they have set up a memorial Christmas tree at the front of the club on Gorgie Road for members to add memorial stars, baubles or anything members would like to leave for their absent friends of the BMC club. They invite people to take a seat on the bench next to the tree whilst they cherish fond memories of their loved ones.

Community Charity Christmas Cards and Gifts
Don’t forget to #ShopHereThisYear and support local when you are buying gifts and cards! To make that easier, we have compiled a list of Christmas cards and gifts from organisations whose proceeds are supporting charities within the Gorgie Dalry community.

Gorgie Dalry Stenhouse Church Online Christmas Services
Our local church is marking the advent season with a series of online services and events. There will also be an intergenerational advent service in the GDS Church on Sunday 6th December, within the current regulations. For full details, see their Facebook page: Gorgie Dalry Stenhouse Church

Gorgie Dalry Community Council December Public Meeting
Not exactly a Christmas celebration, but it will be our last meeting of 2020 (phew, it’s been a busy one)! Join us online or via phone to find out what’s been going on in our community, or to raise any issues that we can help with. All Gorgie Dalry residents and businesses are welcome: full joining details here.

Finally, GDCC would like to wish you and your loved ones a happy and peaceful festive season!
